The annual International Shipbuilding Forecasting Experts Meeting has just taken place in Brussels. The forum enables market forecasters from China, Europe, Japan and South Korea to discuss future market opportunities for global shipbuilding.

On 22-23 June, the experts met for the first time since the pandemic crisis. During the meeting, every delegation presented its market forecast for the coming years, considering a multitude of anticipated factors such as global trade, GDP, environmental legislation, etc.

All in all, the outlook of global shipbuilding looks promising, especially in the light of known and anticipated international and/or regional environmental legislation. To meet the ambition to combat climate change in shipping and become a zero-emission mode of transport by 2050 or beyond, many
ships currently in operation will need to be replaced by new vessels with new designs, zero-emission technologies, and sustainable alternative fuels at affordable costs.

“With challenging and demanding environmental legislation ahead, each region active in shipbuilding will be in the same boat”, said Jenny Braat, CEO of Danish Maritime and chair of ISFEM 2023. “Against the background of this legislation, the outlook for shipyards worldwide looks very promising with many
business opportunities on the horizon. For Europe, there will be promising opportunities too, both for shipyards and equipment manufacturers. I just hope that the EU and national decisions-makers will put the necessary framework conditions in place on time to enable Europe to fully tap into this future potential”.
