Enhanced safety and smarter navigation to be enabled by satellite-based AIS 2.0

Danish Maritime today welcomed to its headquarters the company Sternula, which recently joined as a member-company.

Senior Sales Manager Jakob Weibrecht briefed about Sternula´s efforts in developing AIS 2.0, which thanks to VHF Data Exchange Service technology and a network of modern micro satellites will enable that all ships can send and receive data for the benefit of safety of navigation and which will also offer shipowners, ports and maritime authorities a range of entirely new services and tools.

The revolutionary aspects is i.a. that the new services can be transmitted by means of ships´ existing VHF antennas without investing in new large satellite dish antenna and with the existing cabling onboard, as only a single box – the AIS-transceiver – should be upgraded. This creates new perspectives for e.g. online distribution of maritime safety information including ice charts, route exchange and tools for collision avoidance as well as virtual aids to navigation.

Against this background, it is recommended to follow Sternula´s contribution to digitalization of the maritime sector in the years ahead.

At the meeting, CEO Jenny N. Braat also informed about the services, advice, and benefits, which the industry association Danish Maritime provides for our members.
