As part of the modernisation of its fleet, Rohde Nielsen has successfully completed tests of remote operation technology on the barges Hugin R and Munin R. The tests were carried out at the company’s yard in Grenaa and mark an important step in exploring new operational models and technological opportunities within its dredging and offshore activities.

In cooperation with maritime technology provider MAHI, a Remote Operations Centre has been established in Grenaa, enabling the barges to be monitored and controlled from shore. Initial sea trials conducted outside the Port of Grenaa were completed with positive results and demonstrated potential for enhanced safety and improved operational efficiency.

Michael Martin Wegener Bjarløv, Head of Fleet Operations at Rohde Nielsen, highlights the future perspectives of the new technology:

“We are thrilled to partner with MAHI! Their fast and professional installation of the remote operation system across two of our split hopper barges is complete, proving MAHI’s pragmatic approach. We are now excited to begin phased operations, enhancing capabilities and working directly with our crew and the authorities on the steps toward remote navigation,” says Michael Martin Wegener Bjarløv.

Following the installation, Rohde Nielsen’s captains have been trained to operate the vessels from the Remote Operations Centre. The initiative forms part of Rohde Nielsen’s ongoing efforts to develop and test new technologies that support safe, reliable and future-oriented maritime operations.
